5 Ways to Be More Present

Have you ever been with others, but not really been with them? 

We all do it; we are physically sitting in the room, but we are so focused on whatever else we’re doing that we barely even notice someone is talking to us.

Here are five tips that will help you be more present with those around you:

Stay In The Moment

Make an effort to be totally focused on who you are with when you are with them. Don’t allow your mind to drift to work or to your list of tasks to do tomorrow. If you’re meeting with a friend over coffee, ask questions and keep eye contact to let them know you’re present in the moment. If you are spending time with family and loved ones, ask questions that spark conversation, and bring up happy memories that everyone can share together.

Decompress While On Auto-Pilot

Listen to music you love or a fun podcast while doing everyday tasks like getting groceries, driving to/from activities, or while on your commute to/from work. Try to let the stress of the day go, so that by the time you get home and/or are around others, you have left your work and stress behind.

Set Boundaries

Try to keep your smartphone and laptop away from arm’s reach. When you are in the company of others, they deserve time with you that is just for them. It’s hard to focus on who you are hanging out with when you’re distracted with social media, online games, or work emails.

Be Aware; Be Mindful

Mindful meditation can help you become more aware and present in the moment, as well as just taking in your scenery one moment at a time. When you are present in the moment, you may be surprised just how easy it can be to really enjoy and appreciate what you’re doing and who you’re with.

Don’t Forget to Have Fun

Nothing keeps you present like pure enjoyment, laughter, and delight. Have fun and just enjoy being in the company of others! Try a dance party, a fun new game, or a restorative walk in nature. When you’re with someone you enjoy spending time with and you’re doing something that fills your cup, it helps to build new memories as well as strengthen the bonds you already have. The best gift you can give to your family, friends and loved ones is to spend your time with them, so you may as well have fun in the process!
