Kim’s Top Tips for Other Women Thinking of Starting a Business
Find Your Niche!
I once had a coach who said ‘the riches are in the niches’. It is a noisy world and it can be tough to standout. Find your niche, what makes you unique and own it! Brand it, live it and promote it passionately! I started in the pregnancy Niche and was known as The Fitness Doula. As my business expanded, the name no longer resonated with the majority of my clients. When I walked on stage to speak at the 2017 National Mompreneur Conference, I jokingly said ‘Now you have a Vagina Coach for your business’. A lightbulb went off and I changed my brand to Vagina Coach. It has been one of the best things I’ve done in my business.
As you become clear in your brand and your niche you will come up with phrases or names. Once you have determined they are unique, trademark them! I have the trademarks for Prepare To PushTM and Kegels & CocktailsTM and hopefully Kegel Mojo soon! I have had to enforce them many times, thankfully with compliant parties. It protects you but also adds value to your brand should you sell down the road.
You Report To You.
Something I struggled with early on was having no one to report to. No one to tell me what to do or guide me. I had to figure shit out on my own, motivate myself, and structure my day with new parameters. Trust yourself and love yourself because you will be spending a lot of time with your new boss.
Join a Networking Group.
Hanging out with your new boss (you) all the time can get boring! I needed to get out of the house, to bounce ideas off others, to be inspired by others and to learn from others. I tried a few and once I found Mompreneurs it was where I wanted to be. Friendships, support, customers, inspiration, and opportunity have all come from joining and I highly recommend you do the same.
Just Do It!
This ever-popular slogan is one to live by. If you have an idea, make it happen. Be the first and don’t watch your competitors or anyone else; just make it your own and do it! Be the one to copy! On that note, people will copy you; and if you have the trademark, awesome – they will have to stop but if you don’t (because you don’t have the trademark or can’t trademark it) then accept it as a form of flattery and then move on and do something else awesome! Just do it and keep doing it!
