When we hear the word ‘detox’ we almost always think of the latest fad diet, cleansing juices, and having to starve our bodies in order to ‘get back to health’. The truth is, our bodies are well-equipped to detoxify naturally, but some of our daily habits hinder the process from being done fully and successfully.
Here are some healthy habits you can implement, in order to kick start your body’s natural detoxification process:
Drinking the daily recommended 6-8 glasses of water a day will keep your kidneys and liver performing at their best level, helping to remove contaminants and salt from your bloodstream and removing fat deposits in the process. Make water your go-to beverage of choice throughout the day, and avoid sugar-heavy options like juices and sodas. You can get creative and boost your water intake by adding natural fruits and flavours to keep the process interesting and flavourful.
Choose Wholesome & Natural Options
This applies to your food intake, products used to clean your skin, your home, and your clothing, and other elements of your daily life where you may likely be adding a host of harmful chemicals to your body.
- Choose to fill your diet with healthy and vitamin-rich whole foods like unprocessed grains, fresh vegetables, and health-boosting nuts, seeds, legumes and berries. An overconsumption of highly processed foods can directly impact your vital organs in a negative way, stopping your body’s natural filtration of waste.
- Your skin is the largest organ of your body, and protects you from chemicals, bacteria and temperature. Pay attention to the ingredients list on skincare and household cleaning products, and avoid particular add-ins such as aluminum, polyethylene and polypropylene. Everything your skin touches is absorbed into your body, so try to opt for natural and organic options with minimal ingredients as much as possible.
Sweat & Sleep
Regular movement helps to eliminate toxins, as it encourages the circulation of our bloodstream and lymphatic system, and increases sweat production. When we sweat, it helps to lower inflammation, naturally allowing our organs to cleanse themselves and rid our body of toxins. Looking to start implementing more movement into your daily routine? Committing to at least a 30-40 minute walking regimen each day will help you reach 150 minutes of weekly moderate movement recommended, and will help you sleep better in the process – another essential component to rejuvenate and cleanse the body naturally.
