Have you ever been with your family, but not really been with them?
We all do it; we are physically sitting in the living room, but we are so focused on whatever else we’re doing that we barely even notice that they’re talking to us.
Here are five tips that will help you be more present with your family:
STAY IN THE MOMENT
Make an effort to be totally focused on your family when you are with them. Don’t allow your mind to drift to work or to your list of tasks to do tomorrow.
DECOMPRESS ON AUTO-PILOT
Listen to music you love or a fun podcast while doing everyday tasks like getting groceries, driving to/from activities, or while on your commute from work. Try to let the stress of the day go, so that by the time you get home you have left your work behind.
Try to keep your smartphone away from arm’s reach on evenings and weekends. Your family deserves this time with you and it’s hard to focus on them when you’re distracted with social media, online games, or work emails.
Mindful meditation can help you become more aware and present in the moment, as well as just taking in your scenery one moment at a time. When you are present in the moment, you may be surprised just how easy it can be to really enjoy and appreciate what you’re doing and who you’re with.
Nothing keeps you present like pure enjoyment, laughter, and delight. Have fun with your family and just enjoy each other’s company! Try a dance party, a fun new game, or a restorative walk in nature. When you are all doing something that fills your cup, it helps to build new memories as well as strengthen the bonds between your loved ones. The best gift you can give your family is to spend your time with them, so you may as well have fun in the process!
